Little Lulu Vol. 6: Letters To Santa – by John Stanley & Irving Tripp

    Volume: #6 of #18 | 239 pages | Dark Horse

Rating: ***** (One of the better volumes.)

Summary: Here’s another Little Lulu compilation by Dark Horse. There’s a nice array of stories in this one, including “The Big Snow,” one of the few I read as a little girl, back when I used to read these comics in Spanish.

Besides the few usual one-page or half-page gags, included in this volume are twenty-five stories. Please scroll down to the bottom of the post to see a detailed summary of each one.

Recommended to fans of: Classic comics in general. Old Disney comics, Harvey comics such as Casper, Little Audrey, Richie Rich, Hot Stuff, Little Dot, Little Lotta, etc.

Favorite story: The one in which Tubby bets Lulu a nickel that he can keep quiet for longer than she can; also, “Fresh Eggs”.

What I liked best: I love how Mops barks– yab yab yab! I guess his hair keeps getting in the way of his mouth, he he. :P

What I didn’t like: “Homework” was my least favorite story in this volume. I found it relatively unfunny.

Verdict: I liked almost all the stories. If you have kids, buy them this book; give them a chance to enjoy this classic little gem while it is still available. I highly recommend getting all the volumes in this series while they are still available.

    1. The Big Snow (Lulu tells Alvin a story about how she once got snowed in while all alone at home.)

    2. Untitled #1 (Lulu and Tubby go ice-skating together, but Tubby keeps slipping and falling on top of Lulu. When Eddie shows up, Lulu skates with him instead, which prompts a jealous Tubby to pretend being out cold after he slips and falls over the ice.)

    3. Untitled #2 (Lulu wants to enter a snowman contest, which soon turns into a boys-against-girls battle.)

    4. Double Trouble (Tubby accidentally breaks his violin’s bow while playing when he should be practicing instead, so he decides to run away from home before his mother notices.)

    5. Untitled #3 (Lulu meets a poor little girl who never gets any presents from Santa, so (after ensuring Santa will bring her a big, brand new doll as replacement) she decides to give the poor girl her old dolly. But when the time comes to part with it, Lulu doesn’t find it easy!)

    6. The Hairbrush Mystery (Lulu gets the blame when her mother finds some of the dog’s hair in her hairbrush, and as usual it’s up to Tubby “The Spider” to find the real culprit.)

    7. Little Lulu Discovers America (To distract Alvin from stealing an apple, Lulu tells him a story about how she discovered America.)

    8. Untitled #4 (Lulu worries about her dog Mops having a cold when he won’t stop sneezing.)

    9. Toothache (Tubby’s mother forces him to go to the dentist’s office when he complains of a bad toothache.)

    10. Untitled #5 (Rich kid Wilbur “invites” Lulu to have a couple of sodas, only to quickly run away when it’s time to pay for them. However, Lulu is determined that he at least pay for his own soda, and chases him all the way to his house.)

    11. The Hooky Player (Tubby and the gang decide to play hooky instead of going to school. Lulu finds out, and when she spots truant officer McNabbem as she is on her way to school, she runs to warn the boys. But McNabbem confuses Lulu with a hooky player, and is soon on a wild chase after her!)

    12. Little Girl With No Name (Lulu tells Alvin a story about a little girl so poor she did not even have a name.)

    13. Untitled #6 (Tubby bets Lulu a nickel that he can keep quiet longer then she can.)

    14. Homework (Lulu’s homework flies out the window just as she finishes it.)

    15. Fresh Eggs (Tubby’s mother sends him to the store for some eggs. When he runs into some boys on the way home, Tubby hides the eggs in his clothes so they won’t see them and tease him, but he walks so funny that it has the opposite effect.)

    16. The Ventriloquist (Tubby throws his voice to fool Lulu into believing that her mother’s mirror can talk.)

    17. Froglegs (Tubby gets Lulu to help him catch frogs so he can sell them to a restaurant, while telling Lulu that the people will just want them for pets.)

    18. The Little Girl Who Always Laughed (Lulu tells Alvin a story about a little girl who laughed at anything and everything.)

    19. The Man Hunter (Lulu wants to prove to Tubby that her dog Mops can follow a trail.)

    20. The Gambler (The gang sees Tubby taking money out of the clubhouse treasury and using it to take an “ugly” girl (why do “ugly” girls in comics always wear glasses?) on a date. But does Tubby have an ulterior motive…?)

    21. Alvinsitting (Lulu has to mind Alvin while his mother is out.)

    22. Untitled #7 (Lulu helps Tubby deliver a package to a haunted house.)

    23. Lulu’s Umbrella Service (Wilbur hires Lulu to have her walk him home under her umbrella, with the condition that she has to give him his quarter back if a single drop of rain falls on his hat.)

    24. The Unseen Enemy (Tubby becomes very anxious when he receives a threatening, anonymous phone call.)

    25. Untitled #8 (Lulu tells Alvin the story of how she discovered the North Pole.)

    …and that’s all of them! :)
